Hmm.
So I remember when I had a Tumblr blog. Can’t post easily in Squarespace, so maybe I’ll end up here all over again.

Is It Safe?
When I was younger, dental care was one of those luxuries reserved for kids in the comfortable middle class, much like summer camps and not eating corn flakes for dinner 3 nights/week. I’m amazed that my parents could afford to take me to get my vision looked at every few years; with unexplainable severe myopia, I know it was an expensive prospect (hell, I still can’t afford to re-up...

You Know, I Used to Blog a Lot.
Now, it just never seems important enough to take the time to do. Well, I take that back. I intermittently update my Wordpress blog, but that’s not a personal spot at all, and instead lives for me to push dry academic papers to. So, the personal stuff: I graduated. Again. Now I have two degrees for the price of three! I missed commencement—again—but I do believe I officially...

The Script Says I'm Supposed to Hit You With This
Now that I have a Master’s degree essentially in hand, I think it’s high time I post about something important: The Simpsons. I’ve been re-watching classic seasons while I’ve been laid up with a sinus infection and wisdom teeth removal, and it occurred to me that maybe the Simpsons hasn’t gotten worse, precisely, but maybe we’ve become a dumber audience. Like...

Op-Ed Columnist - Our Greatest National Shame -... →
Hmph, the conclusions drawn here are fairly disingenuous to anyone who’s actually been a teacher: good teachers make the most difference to students (actually, it’s disingenuous to anyone who’s watched Dangerous Minds). The connections are key to educational success or failure. Too bad we continue to treat educators as criminals first—random drug testing, state, federal,...

I’ve decided I really love Andrew Bird this week. I’m not convinced this is the best song on Noble Beast, but it’s my current favorite, and encompasses the overall feel of the record. More importantly, it communicates the feeling I get from this album—that it’s simultaneously completely novel, but as familiar to me as one of my parents’ old LPs.

Only Franz...
I love a lot of bands. I adore the Arcade Fire, Ted Leo speaks directly to my soul, and of course, there is a hole in my heart shaped like Sleater-Kinney…those are a few of my favorites, the ones who have made a real impact on my life. For all that, though, only Franz Ferdinand can put a grin on my face with only a few chords (and make me want to strut like a total badass). Yeah, I just got...
